PostHeaderIcon Which is the Best/Easiest Web Design Software to use?

I am beginning in the web design business, Which software is the easiest and which one has the most creative designs? I am looking into Dreamweaver CS3 how is this to work with?
Also with web design software is there a place to link to you domain name (nameservers setting?)

thanks.

The main two tools creators use are Dreamweaver and Photoshop. There are various versions, suites, etc, but even old versions of these do an excellent job and are much less expensive the the current version. CS3 is excellent and has all the bells and whistles you will ever need. It makes uploading to the server a snap and even working directly on the server version if you want to. (Why I don’t know).

Fireworks will do some things in graphics easier than Photoshop, and you can usually pick up a good used copy for $10 at a flea market or garage sale if you watch for it. However it is a good backup to Photoshop, and will do some things faster and easier, but the full program is not a good replacement for Photoshop. Its a great extra tool.

You asked what is easiest. More and more designers are moving to opensource (free) content management systems (CMS) for their designs. Joomla is probably the most popular but everyone has their favorites. The nice thing about a CMS is that they are totally online and have a wide range of templates available so that the scheme of the entire website can be changed in only a couple of clicks, and changed back as easily. (You can still add your own flair to the design). They have options built in for adding contact pages, mass email lists, forums, shopping carts, rss feeds, and hundreds of other mods very simply with a only a few mouse clicks.

With Joomla, each page can be created as easily as with a word processor and images uploaded easily. One checkbox decides if it the "article" appears on the main page, or somewhere else. Menus can be created just as fast, and menu buttons moved when needed without the need to re-do links or create new buttons.

Each page has wysiwyg editing, but you can also add html that you create in Dreamweaver or elseware and just drop it in and save the page.

Below are a number of sites that were developed with Joomla. Notice the wide variety of schemes.

In addition, if you are designing, and want to increase the marketability of your products, consider integrating them with self designed social networks from Ning.com. It’s free, easy and will often be the "cherry on top" that sets your work apart from others. For example, if you create a design for a business in Kalamazoo, consider connecting the finished product to a social network you created on Ning called the Kalamazoo Business Network. Innovation like this will not only help you get repeat customers, but referrals.

Here is a small example of a Ning social network:

PostHeaderIcon What is the difference between web design and graphic design?

Well, I’m getting closer and closer to graduating but I’m confused on what to take in college.i wanna be a web designer.what courses should i take. i wanna make the websites i make interactive attractive and great and also have fun doing it. but it looks like i should take both web designing and graphic design or what ever.

In college I was a graphic design major and now I am a freelance web designer. After I got my degree, I went back to get a certificate in web design and authoring. It’s great you are interested in web design, because that field is really growing, and many businesses always need upgraded, professional sites.

graphic design courses are great to take, because you learn about typography, page layout, and creative presentation, and this spurs your creativity. Some of the basic web courses are included in the graphic design degree. Most colleges do also offer a web design certificate, which enables you to learn the web tools and programs, such as dreamweaver, photoshop, and flash. Make sure you take a course on css, which is a must for web designers.

Hope I helped, and good luck!

PostHeaderIcon What is the difference between graphic design and desktop publishing?

I am interested in desiging layout for a magazine. Is that graphic design or desktop publishing?

Can you give me a brief description of what graphic design is vs. what desktop publishing is?

Thanks in advance!
<3 Kerry

The best way to answer your quest is that desktop publishing is a small aspect of the graphic design industry.

Desktop publishing is essentially dealing with the content aspect of the publishing industry. It is dealing with layouts, placement, content, imagery, and just about everything else that is required of putting together a published piece with the except of the written content and the actual printing aspect of it. It is the heart and soul of the publishing business.

To correct what the previous answerer stated, the current world of graphic design goes far beyond just logos. These days graphic designers are not only expected to design logos and stationery, but also know a significant amount of desktop publishing, typography, printing, and to a lesser extent photography, advertising, and web design. We are expected to know a little bit of everything when it comes to designing projects.

To answer your question, yes, what you are interested in is desktop publishing. However, there are very few jobs these days that are purely desktop publishing with the except of the newspaper industry. Anything that involves designing layouts these days are turned over to graphic designers, so if that’s what you’re interested it in then that should be what you should be pursuing.

Good luck to you in your future endeavors.
