I am setting up a business, and one of the main parts will be a website. The site is fairly simple, static, non-transactional.
How much does hosting cost per year? I dont need anything special, but something very reliable with good customer service.

I have found that using Webstarts is the easiest way to complete you very own free website. There is a uniqe drag and drop tool that is extremely easy to use. Plus with a free membership you can get up to 5 free websites.

I need a good, free (if possible) program so i can design my website.

I use Adobe dreamweaver since adobe bought it off macromedia….it’s pretty easy and you can do more advance thing in it if you want.

If you are serious, i think the work force wood require you to know that program.

I want to check on the status of a job application. The job posting site doesn’t have a phone number, only an email. I emailed my application a week ago. However, when I look at the company’s main website, they list a phone number.
I’m not good with business etiquette – is it rude to call seeing that the job posting doesn’t have a number? Or should I call and show that I’m proactive and looked at their website?

I would first email the company again to find out the status of your application. If they don’t respond (say, in 2-3 days), then I would call their number and ask for HR.

What kind of webpage?

HTML? CSS?

I self-taught myself by simply figuring out what I wanted, say a background colour, then I googled how to do that. Then I wanted a text box, so I googled that. I built it all up until I had a fairly vast knowledge of HTML. Read through a few sites that have the basics and you’ll catch on pretty fast.

Just a tip is to not cross over tags;
RIGHT
<right><b></b></right>
WRONG
<right><b></right></b>

And nearly every HTML tag has a pair, never forget that.

Sorry thats a bit like 2 questions in one but, I want to get into software design, mostly for public information screens and probably on some sort of Linux OS as they’re more flexible. I am a total newb when it comes to Linux also! Where would be the best place to start designing professional web pages? Please don’t say Frontpage its TERRIBLE!

Currently I play in the Automotive Paint Sector and own a company called Brushless Colors. I am in the process of selling off the company, not the name, and am merging over into the Web Design sector for a career.

Currently I have Blue Ice Studio as a business name but just don’t seem like I get much enthusiasm over the name when I say it to others.

Which do you like better for a web design company name?

Some are just telling me to keep my original name cause it fits the web design part as well. Maybe you have another name that you think might work better….mention it if you would.

The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name’s originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route…

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what’s out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I’d try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I’m not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You’ll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

I’m thinking about going for a double major but I’m not sure how graphic design and music will fit together. Are there any jobs where I can use both of my talents as a painter and a musician? I really need some guidance.

Media arts and animation and Music would be good together

so would Game Arts or Video Production with music composition, but i don’t think I would couple it with graphic design, Graphic design does not really need music, but the other three do.

I suppose it would be handy to have the degree in both for your resume, but I cant imagine a job where they would need those two in one. You might get lucky but i doubt it. You may only get accepted for one or the other, but taking them together will increase your chances of finding a job. Two skills is better than one.

I’ve just obtained flash CS4 professional, and i would like to create a simple flash game with it. Where are some good tutorial sites where i can learn how to make SIMPLE flash games.
