PostHeaderIcon What is some graphic design software for beginners?

I currently use Print Shop but am looking for some better graphic design software. I am a fast learner but am still looking for something user friendly that I will be able to jump right into with little experience at first. I will be using the program for designing graphics for t-shirts. Any suggestions?

Learn how to solve problems with vector graphics before you start messing with bitmaps and photos. Adobe Illustrator is great for that. Especially if you’re going to be doing T-shirts – you’ll need to separate colors for silkscreens and things like that, so you’ll need to do vector graphics. Although some printers do offer digital bitmap tshirt printing. I did one myself at: http://examplify.blogspot.com/2008/05/calcc-t-shirt-design.html

Remember that serious graphic design is not about software, it’s about communicating ideas. Knowing how to draw helps immensely, so keep improving your drawing skills every day.

Best of luck!

PostHeaderIcon Does it matter where you get your graphic design certificate?

I just graduated with a BA degree in business administration. I am planning to work full time and get a certificate in graphic design. I live in Los Angeles and thinking about going to UCLA or Santa Monica College to get the certificate.

So, does it matter where did I get my graphic design certificate when I look for a job in graphic design industry in the future?

If so, which college or university do you recommend?

Thank you for your time!

Which ever school will give you the best ability, lots of ppl have degrees or certificates in design. You need to actually be the best designer for the job, especially with the way the economy is.

PostHeaderIcon What are the similarities and differences between the careers of graphic arts and graphic design?

I’m not sure if I should major in graphic arts or graphic design. What can you do for a career in graphic arts and graphic design? What are the similarities and differences between these two?

Graphic design is art done with a computer, and art is well….art done by hand.

PostHeaderIcon I really want to get into graphic design, where do I start?

I’m a terrible artist, and I’m equally as bad with computers. However, I’m intrigued by the prospect of graphic design. Should I start off with learning art without computers, and then moving to art with computers? Is there a computer program that is common for graphic designers? Where do I start?

I would start with the very basics of art and simple drawing. That will give you a good background of how to see the world through a creative perspective. Art schools also teach the basics of computers and a program that you will need to know is Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Illustrator is also a good one but Photoshop is first and foremost. Start with very basic ideas such as cropping and meshing photos and creating your own advertisement is a fun way to begin. Good luck!

PostHeaderIcon What kind of graphic design software is most commonly used with a PC?

I am an aspiring graphic designer and I have a Dell, which is obviously a PC.I was wonder if there were any graphic design softwares out there that could be used with a PC.

Any help here?

If you want a free one, GIMP can take a little bit to get used to but it’s good once you get the hang of it.
If you have some cash, Corel Photoshop pro costs $120 last I checked for the latest version. I only use it because my cousin bought if for my birthday and it’s amazing.
Paintshop is a bit weaker in my opinion but a good $30-$70 depending on the version.
I also bought Printshop Deluxe for $50 before I got Corel.

PostHeaderIcon What elements of my graphic design portfolio should i have?

I am a going to be a junior this year in school, and I am trying to start up my graphic design portfolio. What are some of the different elements that I should display? I was thinking of doing an add for sneakers, water, and showing how two of the same products would be advertised in different magazine (i.e Harper’s Bazaar and National Geographic) I was also thinking of doing an identity package. But what else should I do?? I really want to have it put together by January and I need some helpful tips and opinions. Thanx!

Some general things that most graphic designer have in their portfolios…

1. Several logos and identities
2. A few specific pieces of advertising
3. A campaign of some sort that shows that you design a system, not just singular items
4. A few books and/or magazine to show that you know layouts
5. Packaging and packaging design
6. Illustrations, preferably both digital and illustrative, depending on what strengths you want to showcase
7. One or two pieces that showcases your typography skills, whether that be a book layout, poster, or something else entirely

Also, I’m not sure how you plan on approaching this project, but you should also consider designing the portfolio itself. One of the least interesting things you can do is to tuck everything you have into a standard portfolio binder and bring it to interviews. Consider designing the portfolio itself as a graphic design project. After all, the portfolio itself should also reflect your ideals as a designer, not just the work inside it.

Best of luck to you.
