The Psychology of color in web design

Color by virtue of its tremendous expressive qualities is one of the most effective tools in advertisements and presentations. Web design is no exception in this regard. Psychologists have found out that color impression can account for 60% of the acceptance or rejection of that product or service.

Understanding the proper uses, emotional response, and psychological implication of color is crucial to effective communication between you and your target audience through the website. Color has gradually evolved into a discipline which is increasingly being taken quite seriously by web professionals to better influence and illustrates the message, mood, and flavor of web sites and the visitors.

Here’s a brief elucidation on varying dimensions of color.

There is a high degree of universality in the implicit meaning of color across cultures and geographies

Name something Green, people will refer to trees, name something blue, people will mean water. People generally associate colors with where each color is predominantly found, regardless of cultures and regions.

In general terms Red symbolizes energy, strength, passion; Blue stands for wisdom, calm, reassurance; Yellow reflects intelligence, social energy; Green indicates healing, success, fertility; Grey points to security, dignity, amongst other things.

Here’s a description of the symbolic significance and potential uses of common colors.

Red

Symbolizes Passion, fire, love, lust, war, violence, blood, and aggression

Potential Uses Where the aim is to motivate an individual to initiate action, convey a warning, or stop the user.

When using different shades of red on a website, exercise caution Bright red can be quite irritating if used over large areas.

Pink

Symbolizes: Calming, cute, candy, soft romantic, and feminine

Potential Uses: When you want strike on a user’s caring or romantic side.

Orange

Symbolizes Vibrancy and warmth. It is like a less passionate red.

Potential Uses Recommended for food sites, nature sites.

Orange is good in moderation. Over-use should be avoided.

Yellow

Symbolizes Sunshine, caution, happy, cheerful, warmth, hope, light, energy, weakness or illness, or symbolize cowardice.

Potential Uses: To make a webpage brighter and more spring-like.

Like red, it catches attention swiftly, but can be an irritant if over-used.

Green

Symbolizes: Spring, renewal, fertility, wealth, inexperience, health

Potential Uses: Excellent color option for websites about money and growing.

Blue

Symbolizes: Sky, sea, intelligence, reassurance, also depression and sadness.

Potential Uses: To give a website formal look and feel.

Purple

Symbolizes:Creativity, spiritual and mysterious.

Potential Uses: Best for spiritual sites, expressing romantic tenor

Black

Symbolizes: Power, elegance, and sophistication, death (Western context), evil, anger and sadness.

Potential Uses: Be on the safe side, never use over a wide area.

White

Symbolizes: Cleanliness, purity, and spirituality. It symbolizes life and marriage in Western cultures, but it is symptomatic of death in Eastern cultures.

Potential Uses: Great as an accent or background color because it makes other colors seem more vivid and bold

How to make color scheme work for you

Keep it simple . A color palette using three or fewer overall colors contributes to the clarity of a web page.

Use white space . White space does a balancing act for colors, lets the design breathe and makes a large site feel less complex.

Be consistent . Consistency in colors (i.e. links, menu items, instructions etc.) allows your audience to instinctively know where to look for information.

Know your audience. Before you set the ball rolling in design, you should be convinced enough what colors the audience would find compelling and right for your product.

Choose the right temperature of colors . The perception of your site is affected by your choice of warm or cool colors. Cool colors are water and sky colors like blue and purple; warm colors are red, orange and yellow. The temperature of a color affects how your message is likely to be perceived. SALE written in red will be perceived as more vibrant and urgent than soft purple text.

Let color contrast distinguish significant parts of your site.

Contrast between text and its background is essential for legibility. Dark text on a white background, for instance, is more legible than orange text on a red background. Different elements on your web page (i.e. the menu and body of the page) must contrast or they will begin blending together.

Color lesson: A well-considered color scheme can transform an okay website into a great web site

Color is one of the most important yet not-so-thoroughly understood elements of web design today. Whether web designers appreciate it or ignore it, visitors to a site respond to colors and other visual elements on the site on a psychological level, and will continue to do so.

Color affects the emotion of the audience, and emotion, in the process, drives decision-making. An intrigued visitor is more likely to be engaged in your site — whether it is meant to inform, entertain, or to sell products or services or ideas.

But if the colors are unsuitable, or outrageous, or not in line with the underlying symbolism, the visitors can outrightly reject the site–and the products as well–no matter how good they are. So, picking colors on your website carefully can transform your site, and of course, your business too.

How do I design a webpage like this?

http://www.pictures-of-cats.org/

One of the sites I have visited lately. If I am correct the website is just one huge div? Is that how it was created?

It would appear they used tables and the use of a frame to port their news page. This website layout is horrible though, I suggest you learn the use of DIV rather than tables. Hope they didn’t pay a lot for the design of this website.

Web Site Design Principles And Best Practices

The key to designing an excellent website, and doing it in the least amount of time, is planning. Internet web site design follows a set of principles which you must incorporate into your plan. Additionally, you’ll want to use a good web building tool to expedite the process.

Planning your web site on paper first is vitally important. I don’t mean planning every little detail, I just mean planning the look and feel of your homepage, as well as the navigation or flow chart of the various pages of your entire web site.

Think of your website as a pyramid with your homepage as the pinnacle of the pyramid. Your visitors will navigate from your homepage to your 2nd tier pages, and from there to the 3rd tier pages. In the beginning, you will just want to build your home page and the 2nd tier pages.

Here’s a Fast Track Technique to make your job of designing and building a website a lot easier:

All you really have to do is plan one page, your homepage, and then clone all your other 2nd and 3rd level pages. Your goal should be to make one perfect webpage, and then you’ll simply use this as your template and fill in the pages with different content.

Let’s look at the requirements of a successful webpage. A good webpage must fill the needs of the visitor to your site, as well as the needs of the search engines, and must also entice the visitor to click-thru to the merchant page where s/he can make a purchase.

But that’s not all. A webpage should also capture the name and email address of the visitor. There should be numerous places and opportunities for the visitor to opt-in to your newsletter or to get your freebie product. I recommend you put your opt-in email capture form on every page of your website. Getting your visitor’s name and email address is actually more important than selling a product to your visitor.

Optimizing your webpages for the search engines is especially important to get free, targeted traffic to your site. Using articles that you write about your business, combined with SEO webpage design principles practically guarantees an avalanche of targeted traffic to your website.

In addition to convincing your visitors to give you their name and email address, and optimizing for the search engines, a top notch webpage should also be designed to nudge the visitor along a pre-defined path to get the visitor to take a particular action. The action you usually desire the visitor to take is to click on the link that leads to your merchant page where a purchase can be made.

Here is where website navigation becomes vitally important. The amount of clicks from the time your visitor arrives at your website to the merchant page where the visitor is confronted with an offer should ideally be not more than three clicks.

The navigation must also be designed so that the visitor is not overwhelmed with choices. I see too many websites that offer a plethora of choices to the customer. This is a Big Mistake. A confused mind hesitates to make a purchase, or takes no action at all and exits the website in search of a simpler solution.

Design your navigation so that no more than five choices are offered at any one time. So your homepage might offer five category links at the top of your page, each of which might lead to five more 2nd tier links. This already adds up to 25 pages plus the homepage.

The navigation should also be placed in the same place on every webpage to make your visitor’s experience easy and pleasurable. You do not want a frustrated customer. The happy mood is the buying mood. What’s more, a good experience at your website ensures that your customer will return again and again to your website.

Offer excellent, easy to find content at your website. Design your webpages with simplicity in mind. Nothing fancy or complicated. Use a white background and easy to read fonts. Do not overdo the colors! Choose black type and one or two colored fonts and that’s it.

You need to convince your visitor that you are reliable, trustworthy, honest, and credible. To do that your webpages should be conservative, easy to navigate, and easy to read. It’s also important to include your email address prominently.

By following these webpage design guidelines, everybody wins. The search engines do their job by delivering relevant content to the visitor (because your webpage has been optimized for the search engines). The visitor wins by effortlessly locating the information and product that s/he was seeking. The merchant wins by making a sale. And you win by collecting a commission from the sale. You also acquire the customer’s trust, as well as their name and email address, so that you can market to them again in the future.

If you have a small business you are trying to get on the internet your most important issues are things we have focused on. After asking our customers what they are looking for in there web design and hosting company we found they are most concerned with price, there visibility on the net (where they rank on search engines), there ability to update and control there website and then finally the look. We were a little surprised to find out that most small business owners are not totally focused on how the website looked but price and visibility was the main concerns which lead us to add a new search engine optimized website design section. These new sites are not all frilled up with images or flash animations but the search engines will pick them up quick and index them a lot higher than the same site with all the frills. These sites are designed around the Google search engine algorithms. This site has been updated just recently to one of our search engine optimized sites. The only part of the previous site we salvaged was the logo. But we had held the first thousand spots on Google for Hereiamlive and recently we lost the number four spot to another site so we had to get more aggressive and it worked. Google Hereiamlive, and for the first ten pages or more it is our site or something to do with us.
